Story ~ Monster House 2006

 "Horror / Comedy Movie"

"Monster House" is a 2006 animated horror-comedy film directed by Gil Kenan. The movie revolves around three kids who uncover the dark secret of a creepy house in their neighborhood that seems to be alive. The story blends elements of adventure, mystery, and supernatural horror, making it a thrilling ride for both children and adults.

The film begins in a seemingly quiet suburban neighborhood, focusing on a 12-year-old boy named DJ Walters. DJ is an inquisitive and imaginative kid who spends his time spying on his crotchety neighbor, Mr. Nebbercracker, who lives in a dilapidated, eerie house across the street. Nebbercracker is notorious for confiscating toys and belongings that end up on his lawn, scaring all the local children.

One day, DJ's best friend, Chowder, accidentally loses his basketball on Nebbercracker's lawn. As they attempt to retrieve it, Nebbercracker emerges and has a frightening confrontation with DJ, during which he collapses and is taken away by an ambulance, seemingly suffering a heart attack. With Nebbercracker gone, DJ believes the danger is over, but soon realizes that the house itself is alive and hostile.

That night, DJ receives a mysterious phone call from the supposedly empty house. Terrified, he seeks help from Chowder, and they decide to investigate further. The next day, they witness the house coming to life, literally swallowing anything that comes near it, including their friend Jenny Bennett, who is trying to sell Halloween candy in the neighborhood. The trio barely escapes and concludes that the house is possessed and must be stopped.

The children seek advice from an eccentric video game addict and pizza delivery driver named Skull, who tells them about the concept of a "domus mactabilis," a house possessed by a human soul. They realize that Nebbercracker's house is indeed such a house, possibly animated by the spirit of Nebbercracker or someone close to him.

As Halloween approaches, DJ, Chowder, and Jenny plan to destroy the house by targeting its "heart," which they believe to be the furnace in the basement. Armed with makeshift weapons and a vacuum cleaner filled with cold medicine to put the house to sleep, they embark on their perilous mission.

The children enter the house, navigating through various dangers as the structure tries to thwart their progress. Inside, they discover the truth: the house is possessed by the spirit of Nebbercracker's late wife, Constance. Years ago, Constance was an unhappy circus performer who married Nebbercracker. She died tragically during the construction of their home, accidentally falling into the basement and being buried in cement. Her vengeful spirit merged with the house, animating it and causing it to lash out at anyone who approached.

Nebbercracker returns from the hospital, revealing that he has been trying to protect the neighborhood from Constance's wrath. He explains that his aggressive behavior was an attempt to keep people away from the house and prevent further harm. Despite his efforts, the house has grown increasingly uncontrollable.

In a climactic battle, the children and Nebbercracker work together to stop the house. They lure it to a nearby construction site, where DJ manages to throw a dynamite stick into the furnace, causing the house to explode and Constance's spirit to be released and finally put to rest. The house collapses, freeing Nebbercracker from his torment.

In the aftermath, the kids are hailed as heroes, and Nebbercracker, grateful for their bravery, returns all the confiscated belongings to the children of the neighborhood. DJ, Chowder, and Jenny form a closer bond through their shared adventure, having faced their fears and saved their community from a malevolent force.

"Monster House" concludes with a sense of closure and resolution, as the neighborhood returns to normalcy, and the children reflect on their harrowing experience. The film’s blend of humor, horror, and heartfelt moments, along with its unique animation style, make it a memorable story about bravery, friendship, and the power of facing one’s fears.

The film is notable for its impressive animation, produced using performance capture technology, and for its ability to balance spooky and humorous elements. It was well-received by audiences and critics alike for its engaging story, well-developed characters, and innovative visual style, making it a standout in the genre of animated horror-comedy films.
